Gym and fitness marketing
Gym marketing agency for gym groups and studios
A gym marketing agency fills membership for gym operators: it runs local search for every site, paid social and paid search, the January and summer peaks, the online join flow, and the handoff from a new joiner to the retention programme.
We are a fitness marketing agency for multi-site gym groups, budget chains, leisure trusts and boutique studios. Each site gets its own plan. One team runs the group view.

01/ Gym marketing, end to end
One plan per site, one view for the group.
Gym marketing is local. A member chooses a gym they can reach, so demand is won or lost one catchment at a time.
Marketing for gym groups adds a second job: keeping fifty local plans consistent, comparable and on budget.
We run both levels. Each site has its own targets, offers and channel mix. The group sees one dashboard of joins, cost per join and early cancellations by site.
The work splits into five lanes. Each lane below names what we do and the number we watch.

02/ Fitness marketing agency, by operator type
Budget chains and boutique studios need different plans.
A budget chain competes on price and access hours. Volume matters, and the join flow carries most of the sale.
A boutique studio sells a class, a coach and a community. Fewer joiners, higher value, and the first class does the selling.
Leisure trusts carry public objectives as well as revenue, so their plans weigh reach into less active groups. Sport England’s Active Lives survey is the usual reference for who is active and who is not (Sport England, Active Lives, national statistics survey).
Premium clubs sit closer to private members’ clubs; we cover those under luxury fitness club marketing.
03/ Local search per site
Win the map for every gym.
Most gym searches carry a place: a town, a station, “near me”. The Business Profile and the location page decide who gets the visit.
Google asks for one profile per location, named as the business is known in the real world, with an accurate address and the fewest categories that describe it (Google Business Profile guidelines, platform policy). Keyword-stuffed names risk suspension.
For groups we standardise names, hours, categories and photos across sites, then give each location page its own facilities, timetable, parking and transport detail.
Search on gym pages is covered in our guide to gym SEO.

04/ Paid social and paid search
Ads sized to the catchment, not the country.
Google Ads lets you target a radius of at least 1 km around a location, or areas such as towns and postcodes (Google Ads Help, location targeting, platform documentation). It also warns that a very small target may show ads only intermittently.
We set each site’s radius from where its members actually live, then split budget by site so a busy flagship does not starve a newer gym.
Paid search catches people already looking. Paid social builds demand ahead of the peaks and fills classes in quiet months.
Any offer in an ad is an invitation to purchase. The CMA says the total price, including charges a customer cannot avoid, must be given up front (CMA, price transparency summary, regulator guidance). Pricing detail sits on gym membership pricing; placement detail on gym advertising.

Every visit05/ January and summer peaks
Plan the peaks in October and April.
Gym demand is seasonal. January brings new-year joiners; late spring brings the summer push.
Peak campaigns fail when the budget, creative and offer are decided in the same week they launch.
We set peak offers by site in advance, agree caps on spend, and plan what the gym does with the joiners before they arrive: inductions, class space, staff on the floor.
If a peak offer is a free or discounted trial that rolls into a paid membership, the ASA expects the ad itself to say so, with the commitment stated next to the offer (ASA enforcement notice on free trials, advertising regulator). “T&Cs apply” is not enough. Offer design is covered in gym membership offers.

06/ The join flow
Let the join flow finish the sale.
An ad can only bring someone to the join flow. The flow has to finish the sale.
We test the flow on a phone, from ad click to confirmation, for every membership type. Each extra field, unexplained fee or surprise term is a chance to leave.
Show the full monthly price and any joining fee at the start, not at the last step. The CMA treats hiding unavoidable charges until later in the purchase as unlawful drip pricing (CMA, price transparency summary).
Then make the contract terms clear before payment. Consumer-facing terms are explained on gym membership contract.
Is your join flow ready for paid traffic?
01Is the total price shown on the first screen?
02Can a member join on a phone in under five minutes?
03Are contract length and cancellation stated before payment?
04Is each completed join tracked to its ad and site?
Answer the 4 questions to see where you stand.
07/ Onboarding and retention handoff
A join is the start of the job.
A member who cancels in month two cost the same to acquire as one who stays for years.
So our acquisition work ends with a handoff: the first visit booked, an induction offered, and a check-in when visits drop.
Follow-up emails and texts need a lawful basis. The ICO says marketing emails or texts to individuals need specific consent, with a limited soft opt-in for existing customers (ICO, electronic mail marketing, regulator guidance).
The programme after the handoff is gym member retention; rates and benchmarks are on gym membership retention rate; front-line staff actions are on fitness instructor member retention.

08/ Working with us
What a gym group gets from us.
A plan per site, written with the site manager. A group dashboard. Monthly reviews on joins, cost per join and early cancellations.
We start with an audit of local search, ads and the join flow, then fix the flow before raising spend.
We work alongside your in-house team or software provider. Health clubs with spa and racquet facilities are covered by our health club marketing agency page.
