Membership director · the role explained

Membership director: the role, KPIs and job description

A membership director, or director of membership, is the senior lead accountable for an organisation’s members: recruiting them, keeping them, and making membership worth paying for. The role usually reports to the chief executive, owns the membership budget and targets, and leads the managers and teams who run acquisition, renewals, engagement and member services.

Membership director

01/ What does a membership director do?

Owns the number of members, and why they stay.

The membership director is the person whose name sits against the membership line in the business plan.

They decide where members will come from, what they are offered, what they pay and how the organisation keeps them. Other people run campaigns and process renewals; the director is answerable for the result.

In a small body the title may cover a hands-on head of membership. In a large one it sits on the senior leadership team, alongside finance, policy and events.

02/ Membership director responsibilities

Six areas the role is answerable for.

Our synthesis of the role. Your own scope will differ.

The governance tab is the one most job descriptions forget. Category changes, fee rises and admission rules often need approval from a board, a committee or a general meeting, and the director prepares the case.

That work sits with the membership committee, which the director usually supports rather than chairs.

Membership strategy

  • Sets the multi-year membership plan
  • Chooses segments and markets to grow
  • Links membership to the organisation’s purpose

03/ Membership director KPIs

Judge the role on five numbers.

A director measured on activity, such as emails sent or events held, will be busy. A director measured on outcomes will be useful.

Renewal rate is the anchor. For context, Marketing General Inc.’s 2026 benchmarking report puts the median renewal rate at 82%, from a survey of mostly US associations (MGI 2026, via Tony Rossell). Set the target from your own history, not from that median.

Pick the measures below as a set and report them every quarter. The definitions and dashboards belong in your membership KPIs.

04/ Membership director reporting line

Usually to the chief executive.

In most membership bodies the director reports to the chief executive and sits on the senior leadership team.

Below them are managers for areas such as recruitment, renewals, engagement and member services, plus the people who run the database and the helpdesk.

The title can mislead. In company law “director” includes “any person occupying the position of director, by whatever name called” (Companies Act 2006, s.250). A membership director employed on staff is normally not a statutory director unless appointed to the board; if they are, the legal duties come with it.

Charities have the same wrinkle. The Charity Commission says all properly appointed members of the governing body are charity trustees in law, “whatever they are called”, including directors (Charity Commission, CC3). Check the governing document before putting “director” on a contract.

05/ Membership director vs manager vs secretary

Three titles, three different jobs.

A membership manager runs the day-to-day programme: campaigns, renewals, reporting. The administration itself is covered under membership management.

A membership secretary is usually an honorary officer of a club or society who keeps the register and handles admissions for the committee.

Many organisations need only one of the three. Hiring a director where a manager would do, or the reverse, is the most common mistake in membership recruitment.

Keep the accountabilities measurable, and the same as the KPIs above. A job description that lists twenty duties and no targets will attract applicants who manage tasks, not outcomes.

09/ questions

Membership director FAQs.

What does a membership director do?

Leads an organisation’s membership: sets the strategy, owns the proposition, pricing and targets, and leads the teams that recruit, renew, engage and serve members. They are answerable for membership numbers and income.

Is a director of membership the same as a membership director?

Yes. The two titles describe the same senior role; organisations choose one or the other. Head of membership is often the same job in a smaller body.

What are a membership director’s responsibilities?

Membership strategy; benefits, categories and pricing; acquisition and retention plans; the membership database and service standards; and reporting to the board or membership committee on membership matters.

What KPIs should a membership director have?

Total membership or net growth, renewal rate including first-year renewal, cost per new member, membership income against budget, and a measure of member satisfaction or value.

Who does a membership director report to?

Usually the chief executive, as a member of the senior leadership team. They also report on membership matters to the board or membership committee.

What is the difference between a membership director and a membership manager?

The director owns strategy, budget and results; the manager runs the day-to-day programme within that plan. In smaller organisations one person may do both.

Is a membership director a company director?

Not usually. A staff membership director is not a statutory director unless appointed to the board, though company law treats anyone occupying the position of director as one, whatever the title. In a charity, members of the governing body are trustees whatever they are called.

What is a membership coordinator?

Usually an entry or mid-level role that supports the membership team with records, enquiries and renewals. It reports to a membership manager or head, not to the board.
