Membership site marketing

Membership site marketing for paid communities and courses

Membership site marketing is how an online membership business finds paying members, gets them through the first month and keeps them paying: a paid community, a course library, a newsletter or a creator membership.

It is a different job from marketing a professional body. The member pays monthly, can leave in two clicks, and judges you on what happened this week.

01/ what operators report

Growth is slower, and prices are rising.

Memberful, a membership platform, reported for its operators in Q3 2025: average revenue growth of 3.2% a year (down from 7.8%), average annual churn of 9.8% (up from 8.4%), and a first-time sign-up worth $37.72 on average (up from $34.24). Instagram and newsletters were the top acquisition channels (Memberful, The State of Membership Q3 2025; vendor platform data, mostly US).

One platform is not the market, but the direction is clear: new members are harder to win, so keeping the ones you have, at a price that reflects the value, matters more.

02/ where members come from

Own the list before you buy the traffic.

A membership site is sold to people who already trust you, so the first asset is an email list you own. Social posts and search bring people to a free resource; the free resource earns the email address; the emails earn the membership.

Email marketing to individuals needs their consent under PECR, unless the narrow soft opt-in applies to existing customers (ICO, rules on electronic mail marketing; regulator guidance). Build the list with clear sign-up wording from day one.

Most of this happens on phones: smartphones took 77% of UK adults’ time online in May 2025 (Ofcom, Online Nation 2025). Write the sales page for a thumb, not a desktop.

03/ the offer

Sell the outcome, then the access.

People join a membership site to become something: a better coder, a fitter runner, a calmer parent. The sales page leads with that outcome and the people already getting it, then lists what is inside.

Annual plans lock in members for a year and give you cash up front; monthly plans lower the barrier to joining. Most sites offer both and show the annual saving clearly.

04/ the first month

The first month decides the second.

A new member decides in the first weeks whether the membership was worth it. Get them one early win: a first post answered, a first lesson finished, a first live session attended.

Welcome emails should point to that one win, not the whole library. A tour of everything inside is the fastest way to make a new member feel behind.

To do

05/ retention

Keep members by keeping the place alive.

Members of a paid community stay for the people and the rhythm: a weekly session, a monthly challenge, new posts they would miss. Members of a content library stay for new content on a schedule they can predict.

Watch activity, not just payments. A member who has not logged in for three weeks is telling you something before their card is charged again.

Our wider retention thinking for membership organisations is on member retention; the arithmetic is on membership retention rate.

06/ the rules

Make leaving as easy as joining.

The Competition and Markets Authority names cancellation journeys that are harder than sign-up among the online designs that harm consumers (CMA, online choice architecture; regulator research).

The subscription contract rules in the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024 cover many auto-renewing memberships, with reminders and easy online cancellation; the government has set out how they will be implemented.

A clear cancel button with an optional pause or a cheaper plan keeps trust, and the members who pause often come back.

07/ questions

Membership site marketing FAQs.

What is membership site marketing?

Membership site marketing is how an online membership business, such as a paid community, course library, newsletter or creator membership, finds paying members, gets them through their first month and keeps them paying. It combines audience building, an email list, a sales page, onboarding and retention.

What are the best channels to market a membership site?

An email list you own comes first, fed by useful free content on search and social. Memberful reported Instagram and newsletters as the top acquisition channels for its operators in Q3 2025 (vendor platform data). Paid ads work best once the free-resource-to-email-to-sale path already converts.

Should a membership site charge monthly or annually?

Most offer both. Monthly plans lower the barrier to joining; annual plans give cash up front and expose you to churn once a year instead of twelve times. Show the annual saving clearly and let members switch.

How do you reduce churn on a membership site?

Give new members one early win in the first fortnight, keep a predictable rhythm of live sessions or new content, watch for members who stop logging in, and offer a pause or cheaper plan at cancellation. Do not make cancelling hard: regulators treat that as harmful design.

Is a membership site marketing agency different from a membership organisation agency?

Yes. An online membership site sells month to month to individuals who can leave in two clicks. A professional body or association sells annual membership, often paid by employers, with governance and sector rules around it. The channels overlap but the offer, the funnel and the measures differ.
