Membership website development services

Membership website development, built around one member record

Membership website development services build the parts a membership site cannot borrow from a template: the join and renewal flows, the member portal, payments and the connection to your membership system.

We scope the integrations before the code, so the site and the membership record never disagree about who is a member.

01/ what we build

Five things the build has to get right.

Content management (CMS)Public pages your team can editChosen for features nobody uses
Member record linkJoins, renewals and sign-ins read and write one recordTwo databases that disagree
PaymentsCard and Direct Debit, auto-renewal, receiptsPayment pages exposed to script attacks

02/ the CMS

Choose the CMS last, not first.

WordPress runs 39.6% of all websites and 58.3% of those whose CMS W3Techs can identify; Drupal runs 0.6% of all sites, but a larger share of the most visited ones (W3Techs, October 2026; web survey, updated daily).

Either can run a membership site. What decides it is the membership system: which CMS your AMS or CRM connects to cleanly, and who will edit the pages. We choose after the integration map, never before.

Choosing the membership system itself is on membership software.

03/ one member record

One member record, or you do not have a platform.

The membership system holds who is a member, at what grade, paid to when. The website must read that, not keep its own copy. When it does keep a copy, the two drift, and members get renewal emails after they have renewed.

So the first deliverable is an integration map: every place the site reads or writes member data, which system is the source of truth, and what happens when the link is down.

  1. 01
    Join

    Create the record

The form writes to the membership system, then signs the member in.

  2. 02
    Renew

    Extend the record

Payment updates the paid-to date in one place.

  3. 03
    Sign in

    Read the record

Access follows grade and paid-to date, checked live.

  4. 04
    Leave

    Close the record

Cancellation stops auto-renewal and records the reason.

04/ payments

Take card and Direct Debit safely.

Since April 2025 an embedded card payment form must also be protected from script attacks; the PCI Security Standards Council has published how a merchant confirms it. A hosted payment page from your payment provider is usually the simplest route.

Direct Debit suits annual and monthly subscriptions. Under the Direct Debit Guarantee, members must be told 10 working days before a change in amount, date or frequency, are refunded in full for errors, and can cancel at any time through their bank (Bacs, the Direct Debit Guarantee).

05/ sign-in and security

Sign-in members can actually use.

The NCSC now recommends passkeys to businesses “as the default authentication option to offer consumers”, with a strong password and two-step verification as the fallback. Passkeys also cut the password-reset requests that fill a membership inbox.

We build and test against the OWASP Top 10:2025, the standard list of web application risks, and keep member data inside the systems that need it.

06/ the 2027 rules

Build the online exit now, not in 2027.

The subscription contract rules in the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024 apply to many auto-renewing memberships. The government’s response to its consultation sets out how they will be implemented, including reminders and an easy way to cancel online.

Adding a cancellation journey and reminder logic to a live platform later is a project. Building it into a new site now is a design decision, and we treat it as one.

07/ how we work

08/ questions

Membership website development FAQs.

What do membership website development services include?

Building the content management system, the join and renewal flows, the member portal and sign-in, card and Direct Debit payments, and the connection to your membership system so the site and the member record always agree. A good scope also includes an online cancellation journey and a handover runbook.

Should a membership website use WordPress or Drupal?

Either can work. WordPress runs 39.6% of all websites (W3Techs, October 2026) and is easier for small teams to edit; Drupal has a larger share among the most visited sites. Choose the CMS after you know which membership system it must connect to and who will edit the pages.

How should a membership website connect to our AMS or CRM?

The membership system should be the single source of truth for who is a member, at what grade and paid to when. The website reads and writes that record rather than keeping its own copy. Start with an integration map that lists every place member data is read or written.

Can members pay by Direct Debit on a membership website?

Yes. Direct Debit suits annual and monthly subscriptions. Under the Direct Debit Guarantee, payers must be given 10 working days’ notice of changes to amount, date or frequency, get a full refund for errors and can cancel through their bank at any time.

Do we need an online cancellation option?

For many auto-renewing memberships, the subscription contract rules in the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024 are due to require an easy way to cancel online, along with reminders. Building it into a new site now costs far less than adding it to a live platform later.
