Interim membership manager.
Plan temporary membership cover around the work that must continue, the decisions that need authority and the handover at the end.
Use the employer brief for absence cover, a vacancy gap or a defined membership project.
01/ Name the temporary need.
Name the temporary need.
An interim membership manager takes responsibility for a defined period or assignment. Start with the reason: absence cover, a leadership gap, a renewal backlog, a transition or a specific project. The scope should say what must continue and what can wait.
“Interim” describes the assignment here, rather than establishing an employment status. Your organisation must separately agree the engagement arrangement, responsibilities and terms with the appropriate people.
Government business guidance on employment arrangements distinguishes ongoing appointments from fixed-term needs such as absence cover or a defined project. The Association of Illustrators’ membership-manager role is a real example of maternity-cover recruitment, not evidence that every interim role has the same duties.
02/ Separate continuity from change.
Separate continuity from change.
Covering daily service and redesigning the membership offer are different assignments. If both are needed, say how time, authority and support are allocated. A temporary manager cannot resolve a fee or category decision that remains with the board.
Identify live renewal dates, pending applications, unresolved enquiries and commitments to members. Give the interim person a named sponsor who can resolve access or cross-team dependencies.
Where the immediate gap is campaign delivery rather than management of the membership function, consider the existing new member acquisition service or growth marketing agency. Match the support to the work instead of using an interim title for every capacity problem.

03/ Write a useful interim brief.
Write a useful interim brief.
Record the start requirement, likely duration, work pattern, reporting line, team resources and decision rights. Explain why the assignment exists and what information is available. If the duration depends on a permanent search, describe that dependency honestly.
Choose relevant evidence of delivery. A renewal-recovery assignment may need operational discipline, while a transition to a new membership system may need change coordination. Do not make every possible sector experience essential.
Download the interim membership-manager brief. Use it with the job description template and interview questions to keep the scope and assessment consistent.

Resolve the remaining decisions.
04/ Make the live work visible.
Make the live work visible.
Prepare a handover before the start wherever possible. Include a schedule of recurring work, contacts for decisions, the status of active cases and links to the approved rules and procedures. Grant access through your normal controls rather than sharing another person’s login.
Agree how the interim person will record decisions and changes. The organisation should be able to understand what happened when the assignment ends, including outstanding risks and work that still needs an owner.
The membership management guide describes the underlying operating tasks. Keep member recruitment campaigns and staff hiring distinct: the new-member recruitment guide concerns people joining your organisation.
05/ Review the assignment against its purpose.
Review the assignment against its purpose.
Agree review points with the sponsor and evaluate delivery against the brief. Service continuity, an approved project output and a documented handover may be more relevant than a headline growth target that depends on other teams.
If the need becomes ongoing, review the permanent role rather than repeatedly extending an unclear assignment. Update the job description with what the organisation has learned about workload, authority and support.
Use the recruitment overview to frame the next brief. Support, fees and terms should be agreed for the actual assignment; this guide does not promise candidate availability or a start date.
